Cycling on Öland

When cycling on Öland, it is good to have plenty of time, but not because it is exhausting. On the contrary. The small roads almost lift you through the landscape and you can put your energy into really enjoying the unbeatable views, all the sounds and smells, and you probably also want to take a break at the farm shops, cafés or restaurants you cycle past. So take your time.

Around the island there are fantastic bike trails with routes to suit all cyclists, everything from nice forests for MTB to the Öland Trail that winds along the entire island. Öland is simply made to be experienced on two wheels so bring your own bike or rent everything you need on site. Here we recommend some of Öland's best cycling routes.

Gently love Öland

It is a privilege that we get to take part in the changing nature on Öland and get close to it, even protected natural areas. With freedom also comes responsibility. The nature on Öland is fragile and many areas are particularly valuable for the ecosystem. Therefore, we love Öland in a gentle way so that we can also enjoy unique nature experiences in the future all seasons.

Thanks to the right of public access, we have the freedom to move around in Swedish nature, with respect for the place and everyone who depends on it.

Things to think about before your cycling holiday

  • The right clothes and a good helmet
The weather can change in Sweden and go from sunny to rainy to windy depending on where you are and what time of year you are cycling. Bringing an extra wind or rain jacket can be helpful. If you are going to cycle a little longer distances for several days, a pair of cycling pants and cycling shoes can be a good investment that makes your cycling extra comfortable. Helmets are a matter of course!

  • Check your bike
Check that there is enough air in the tires, and that the tires are not worn. Make sure the chain is lubricated and the brakes are working properly.

  • If you get a puncture
Changing a tube if you have a puncture is not that difficult, as long as you are prepared. Make sure to bring a small saddle bag with extra hose, tools and pump so you don't have to stand around waiting for help.

  • Pack in moderation
Do not bring more than you need. If you are going to cycle for a few days, there are good bags that can be attached to the bike, but keep in mind that a lot of luggage makes the bike unnecessarily heavy to ride on. Feel free to pack swimwear and a towel, as you will pass many bathing spots along the way.

  • Finally,
Plan your route in advance, take your time, ride together and have fun! And don't forget to take many breaks and coffee stops along the way, there are plenty of cafes and nice rest areas on Öland!
