1. Färjestaden

Färjestaden is the largest urban area on Öland. In the cozy harbor there are several restaurants and cafes. In the summer, there is life and movement here and while the sun sets over the sound, with the bridge as a beautiful silhouette, there is the occasional evening swim with a jump from the harbor pier.

Due to its location, Färjestaden has always been a centre for crossing the Kalmar Strait. The strait is six kilometres between Färjestaden and Kalmar. From the 1200s, there is the first documented traffic. When ferry traffic ceased, with the advent of the Öland Bridge in 1972, the Kalmarsund company had operated the strait for 106 years. Today, the strait is served in the summer by the bicycle and passenger ferry Dessi.

2. The Mill King

Up on the crest in Björhovda there are three mills in a row. The largest is called the Mill King and is Europe's largest stump grinder. Just north of the Mill King stands a Dutch-type mill, called the Queen. Further north of the Queen is a smaller stump mill, called Prinsen.

3. Beijershamn

Beijershamn is one of the most important bird localities on Öland. It started with the construction of a pier in the mid-1800s that would result in an important port. That was not to be. Due to a faulty construction, the harbour quickly slammed again. Over time, this created good conditions for a rich bird life with reeds, coastal meadows and open water surfaces. Today there are several beautiful hiking areas and a large bird tower with a view of the entire area.

4. Vickleby

The village street through Vickleby is often referred to as one of the most beautiful on Öland. Walk or cycle here on a summer's day and enjoy all the hollyhocks and beautiful buildings. Vickleby has a long history as an artist's stronghold, with Bo Pensionat and Capellagården at the centre. Here you will find restaurants, cafes and galleries.

5. Mörbylånga

Mörbylångadalen is one of Sweden's most fertile cultivation areas. The valley, which used to be the bottom of the lake, has provided farmers with a natural basis for growing cereals and growing other crops such as potatoes, onions and strawberries.

The town of Mörbylånga was founded in 1820 and has several beautiful streets with the character of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The buildings between the sea and the square consist of period wooden houses with idyllic gardens. The square is home to the typical square fountain and around it are restaurants and cafés. The proximity to the water and the harbour leaves its mark on the town, as do the artists and craftsmen who live and work here, where the famous sun painter Per Ekström lived in his last years.
