#2 böda, northern Öland

White beaches, pine-scented forest roads and Iron Age tracks

Böda on northern Öland is one of the island's most popular excursion destinations, known for its long sandy beaches, pine forests and experiences close to nature. Böda Sand, one of Sweden's finest beaches awaits you here - along with cycling and hiking trails  in pine forest areas.

1. Ecopark Böda

Welcome to a varied ecopark with calcareous meadow pine forests and with a diversity of orchids, barren sands with storm-twisted pines and fertile deciduous groves. Within the area, which stretches from Böda to the northern cape, there are several hiking and cycling trails.

 

2. Jaw cart

The area around Skäftekärr is very rich in ancient monuments. Among other things, there are remains of a magnate's farm from the Iron Age that was reconstructed and completed in 1999. In the summer, refreshments and guided tours are offered in connection with the old forester's residence from the 1860s. The fossil exhibition in the museum next door is open during the height of summer. Take a walk in the park surrounding the farm. There is an arboretum with about 140 exotic tree species.

 

3. Rosendal

Rosendal is located a couple of kilometers north of Skäftekärr and is Öland's best-preserved Iron Age village, with a total of 14 house foundations and fence walls that are over one meter high. Rosendal was abandoned 1300 years ago, and when the village was rediscovered in the 1980s, the excavation leader called the area "an agrarian Pompeii", with no parallel in all of Europe. There are also three contemporary burial grounds around the village.

4. Fine

Böda parish is one of Öland's largest parishes and stretches from the community of Böda all the way up to Öland's northernmost tip. In the village there is a café, summer shops and a grocery store.

 

 

5. Böda Harbour

Here you can take part in a small cozy guest harbor. Previously, the port of Böda was an important and large fishing port. Today, it is mainly a popular tourist destination with a restaurant, pub and motorhome pitches. Take a trip out on the jetty and smell the sea.

6. Bödabukten

The bathing areas Fagerör, Homrevet, Lyckesand and Böda Sand together make up Bödabukten. The almost two-mile-long sandy beach has also been called Öland's Riviera and is one of Sweden's most popular beaches. There are many visitors, but along the long stretch of beach there is plenty of room for everyone. Not even the white sand is at risk of drying up thanks to the northbound current that constantly fills the bay with white sand. The area above the beach is best experienced along trails and paths that take you through the speech landscape with an almost magical feeling.

 

Food & drink on northern Öland

In Böda and on northern Öland, there are plenty of options for food and drink in connection with your excursion. In the area around Böda you will find restaurants, cafés and ice cream places – perfect after a day at the beach or in nature.

Around northern Öland, for example in Löttorp, Byxelkrok and along the coast, there are even more restaurants, farm shops and coffee places. Here you can enjoy local flavors, simple lunches or bring something tasty for a break in nature.

Discover on foot

The Linden Reserve is considered to be one of Öland's finest nature reserves. Walk a marked hiking trail and enjoy deciduous forests, pine forests, open pastures, alvars, marshes and herbaceous hay meadows. Here you can experience large stands of linden trees, which is unusual, flower splendor and traces of old Iron Age villages. The reserve is located 2 km east of Byxelkrok. Follow directions nature reserve, Lindreservatet.

Ecopark trail, 39 km: On the winding paths and straight timber roads of the Ecopark, you cycle along the coastal road with its magnificent views. Across the island from coast to coast. Cycle the entire trail or choose a slightly shorter distance.

Tips for kids

In the summer, if it is not too dry, there are plenty of blueberries in Bödaskogen. Bring a jar and pick together. In the autumn, it is instead lingonberries that can be found here. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy the tranquility of the forest. A visit to one of the bathing spots in Bödabukten – always a wonderful excursion.
