Vickleby alvar - classic orchid fields
A few kilometers out on Vickleby alvar is the remarkable Resmozonen, a heavily water-bearing crack zone that flows into Resmo spring, today the entire Mörbylånga water source.
At Vickleby alvar there is both what is typical and what is special about the plant world of the Great Alvar. In the central and eastern parts, extensive gravel elves dominate. In the west, but also around alvar lakes and adjacent to Resmozonen there are well-developed flowering dry meadows. Most of the plant geographically interesting species occur in the area, e.g. woolly ranunculus, Öland sundew, mountain crab, soapwort and mountain carnation. Examples of rare species are rock onions, creeping locust, alvar wormwood, alvar tooth and violet
Animal life is also representative of the Great Alvar. Characteristic birds are skylark, golden plover, and wheatear. Meadow harrier forages in the area. Insects include the rose-winged grasshopper and the peculiar beetle alvar caterpillar killer, as well as the butterflies mountain crab moth, small spinner and ochre yellow carnation fly.
On Vickleby alvar there are traces of old roads, sheep keepers' huts, hake, house foundations and graves, e.g. The altar stone with associated ships. In the small cottages at the edge of the alvar, life used to be very poor. The small buildings at Vickleby alvargata are built of brick limestone or timbered oak planks. The cottages are typical of ore settlements that are erected outside the villages.
