The Andersson family is sitting expectantly on the direct bus Silverlinjen from Stockholm for a long-awaited holiday on the island of sun and wind, and Karl, Elisabeth and Hugo go through the travel plans one last time before it's time for a lunch break. They want to experience a lot during the week and have therefore planned many different stops. Most of the journey on site takes place by bike to get close to nature and have as little climate impact as possible.
The Silver Line is expected to arrive in Kalmar just before 4 p.m. Then a short walk awaits to the harbor where the ferry Dessi will take the family to Färjestaden and Öland. Once in Färjestaden, they pick up their rental bikes. Now the adventure really begins!
The goal is to cycle from Färjestaden via the small roads up to cozy Stora Rör, which will be the first stop on the trip. After an hour or so of cycling, they should reach Stora Rör and the charming and France-inspired Mormors Pensionat Strandhagen, where the first night is booked. Before bedtime, they hope to end the day with an evening swim and watch the sun set on the horizon.
Day two begins with freshly baked bread directly from Mormor's Stone Oven Bakery and Coffee House in the beautiful harbor before the journey continues north. The destination is Öland's only town, Borgholm, but during the journey, spontaneous stops and swimming will be enjoyed. Accommodation is booked at Strand Hotel which is located right by the harbour. Day three is the time to explore the city and visitors to both Borgholm Castle and Solliden Castle await. Dinner and the night are spent at Hotel Borgholm, which is also centrally located in Borgholm. The hotel is well-known for its dining experiences and was awarded a Michelin star in 2021.
On day four, they steer the bikes towards Äleklinta and Sandvik for cycling along the Coastal Road, where wonderful views await along perhaps Sweden's most beautiful road. In Sandvik, they want to eat ice cream and just enjoy the rest of the day by the beautiful beach. At Pensionat Haga they sleep well.
Day five is the goal to visit Hornsjön, Byrum's Raukar and eat hamburgers at Kalk in Löttorp. The night will be spent at Skäftekärr's beautiful hotel. Where they also take the opportunity to visit Skäfteskärr's Iron Age village.
Day six there will be a short bike ride to Böda Sand where the mile-long beach awaits. One night is booked at the campsite. Then it's time to hang up the bikes at the back of the Länstrafikbussen and go back to Färjestaden. There they return the rental bikes and take the Silver Line all the way home to Stockholm.
What a journey they have ahead of them!
