St. Elavi Chapel
In 1969, the church council decided to build a funeral chapel adjacent to the cemetery northwest of the city.
Architect Sven Boysen in Kalmar drew up the drawings. The construction firm Claesson and Anderzen in Kalmar were responsible for the construction work. The chapel was built in a modernist style and was named Sankt Elavi chapel after a medieval chapel once located on Kapelludden. The chapel was consecrated on 7 May 1971 by Bishop Olof Sundby. On the south-east side of the chapel is the bell tower. The church bell was made by Bergholtz Klockgjuteri, Sigtuna.
Nowadays, the chapel is used not only for funeral services, but also for other forms of worship.
The interior
The interior is characterized by the large chancel window that faces the sea. The altar and cross are made by Verda wood industry. The baptismal font was designed by architect Leonad Eriksson in Borgholm. The pew interior was made by Bröderna Färnkvist in Sala.
