The royal family's summer paradise - Solliden Castle
Solliden Palace was built by Queen Victoria in 1906 with inspiration from Italy. Solliden has been the Royal Family’s summer paradise for generations. When you visit the palace gardens, you soon understand why. Here, lush greenery is combined with winding paths and exciting history. Enjoy the geometrical planned renaissance Italian Garden or stroll in the beautiful English Park with its wide lawns. From the Italian Garden a romantic waterfall will lead you the way into the Dutch Garden, a gift from Queen Wilhelmina and laid by Dutch gardeners in 1926. Among the park attractions there are also a number of beautiful rockeries with plants indigenous to Öland.
In the Pavilion, which was built in 1992, there is a new exhibition with a royal theme every summer and in the Pavilion gift shop (Slottsboden) there are presents and gifts of a unique assortment inspired by the royal collections. There are also several shops, nicely set up in small cottages, selling, among other things, award-winning delicacies, genuine Öland crafts and ceramics.
At Solliden you don’t need to go hungry! There is something for everyone here, whether it is a small coffee, a light lunch, a big meal or just an ice cream. The historic Kaffetorpet serves genuine homely fare and home-made
goodies from its own bakery.
