Karlevistenen

Karlevistenen

The Karlevist Stone is Öland's foremost runestone and is also the only granite runestone on Öland. The Karlevist Stone has also been named one of Sweden's most remarkable rune stones.

One side of the carving is written in six-syllable poetic poem and is the only surviving original skaldic stanza in this verse measure in Sweden.

The translation in this difficult-to-interpret verse reads:
The tribe of Thrud of battle, which is the greatest feats followed, most people knew it, is hidden in this mound. A more flawless warrior Yndil's great field's chariot Vidur will not rule over land in Denmark.
The next inscription reads:
This stone was set after Sibbe the wise, the son of Foldan, but his retinue sat at the island....

The carving is believed to have been made sometime in the 10th century and was probably erected by Danes on their way home after the Battle of Fyrisvallarna slightly before the year 1000.
