John C Nelson playground with the pirate ship Barbara
Playground with pirate ship in Borgholm
At the playground you can climb on the ship and look out over the harbour. Here you can also ride a slide, swing and much more.
To honor the memory of John C Nelson, "The Swedish Historical Society of Rockford Illinois" has donated money to the playground, which is therefore named after him and the pirate ship after his wife, Barbara Lunde.
The Americans John Clifford Nelson and Barbara Lunde were Swedish descendants who worked to strengthen the ties between Borgholm and Rockford. John C Nelson, who originated in northern Öland, was called "the Swedish King of Rockford". Over the years, John and Barbara have welcomed and taken care of many Ölanders and Swedes who visited Rockford. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, one in ten Ölanders emigrated to America. Many Ölanders settled in the area around Chicago and Rockford, Illinois in the United States. Since 2002, Rockford has been one of Borgholm municipality's twin towns
