Böda Backs

Böda Backs

Böda backar is located on both sides of road 136 north of Böda community on northern Öland.

Vegetation
On the east side of the road there are high sand dunes and flying sand fields overgrown with pine forest. The forest is old and coarse with open clearings and less dense areas. It is the first generation of mature forest that was partly planted after the dunes were deposited to prevent sand drift and partly has arisen spontaneously. The rest of the forest on the east side consists of older coniferous mixed forests with elements of oak, elm, maple, linden, ash, hazel and sallow. West of the road the forest has a different character, here the substrate is calcareous moraine unlike the sands on the east side.

Plant and bird life
The mix of tree species is large and the forest is sparse with light clearings. Plants found in this part of the forest include musk, common onion and toothroot. The entire area has high conservation values and has a valuable lichen and fungal flora with species such as filamentous lichen, ring lichen and licorice musseron. Birds found in the area include woodpeckers, nightjars and ospreys.

Hiking trail
Böda backar is a popular area for outdoor activities. There are opportunities for your own trips along the Böda trail that goes through the reserve area or one of the smaller trails and exercise tracks. It is close to the sandy beaches of the Böda coast and there are plenty of blueberries among the dunes.
